




| Kansas Woman Elected to Top National Democratic Post The Kansas Federation of Women's Democratic Clubs (KFWDC) members were elated as they returned from the National Federation of Democratic Women's (NFDW) annual convention in Charleston, West Virginia this week-end. Our own Helen Knetzer was elected as President of this organization which has over 27,000 members in 37 states, Puerto Rico, and Guam. Helen will serve a two year term and will be a member of the Executive Board of the Democratic National Committee. Helen is Past President of both the Kansas Federation of Women's Democratic Clubs and the former South Sedgwick County Federation of Women's Democratic Clubs. She resides in Wichita. The election took place last weekend at the annual convention of the National Federation, held in Charleston, West Virginia. Fourteen delegates from across Kansas joined the delegates from across the United States and Puerto Rico for the NFDW Convention. The theme was "Guiding America Back To Greatness". Fran Lee of Topeka, current KFWDC President, received the National Humanitarian Award which was presented at the convention. She formerly resided in Wichita and was known as "Miss Fran" on the TV show, "Romper Room". Miss Fran was the first Romper Room personality to promote African-American, Native American, and Hispanic children to participate on the program. She is now the chair of the Five County Community Action Council which is the umbrella organization for service agencies in that area. She was elected at-large Shawnee County poverty representative. Her work for many years has been to help the underprivileged, the disabled, the underserved, and the aging populations in her area. The Mid-West Region of NFDW elected her Secretary of the region which includes 13 states. Ardena Matlack, Clearwater, was appointed by Knetzer to serve as the National Federation of Democratic Women's Corresponding Secretary. She is currently vice president of the Kansas Federation of Women's Democratic Clubs and is past president of Sedgwick County Federation of Women's Democratic Women's clubs. The convention delegates were privileged to be addressed by Democratic National Chairman, Howard Dean, Elizabeth Kucinich, wife of Presidential Candidate Dennis Kucinich from Ohio, Governor of West Virginia, Joe Manchin III, West Virginia's State Treasurer, State Auditor, State Attorney General, and Agriculture Commissioner, U.S. Congressman from West Virginia, Nick Rahall, and U. S. Senator Jay Rockefeller. The festivities of the convention included a reception at the Governor's mansion.
